In 1964 it was designated a National Historic Landmark.

This memorial weekend is the 125th anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge.

“The Brooklyn Bridge is not only one of the great engineering marvels of all time; it is also a beautiful symbol of New York that is recognized around the world,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “The wonderfully diverse events are representative of the iconic bridge that has connected the people of Brooklyn and Manhattan for generations. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate this legendary icon that has done so much for our City.”

“The Brooklyn Bridge made a big, bold statement right from the start,” said Brooklyn Borough President Markowitz. “In 1883, it was opened with the goal of joining the two largest municipalities in the nation at the time, New York City and the City of Brooklyn—and its glittering span of steel, stone, wood and light continues to symbolize the bond that links our fortunes forever. Today, hundreds of thousands of tourists cross the Brooklyn Bridge each year to get a taste of the ‘Brooklyn Renaissance.’ We wish the Brooklyn Bridge a Happy Birthday—in every one of Brooklyn’s136 languages. At 125 years young, she is as vital and majestic as ever!”

CHALLENGE

IN HONOR OF THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE THIS WEEKS CHALLENGE IS TO WALK AN EXTRA MILE, NOT COUNTED TOWARDS YOUR WEEKLY TOTAL!
Tigerlillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14761882859927345012noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6596323577028001175.post-78275419142163624702008-05-14T08:02:00.000-07:002008-05-14T08:19:22.076-07:00Think Positive!!Last night my Master in Tang Soo Do told us that how we think is very important. If your mind is thinking that you are tired, out of shape and useless... then your body will show that. BUT.. if your mind is thinking that you are strong, energetic and happy.. then your body will show that! Now, which one do you want to be??

Positive and negative thinking are both contagious. All of us affect, in one way or another, the people we meet. This happens instinctively and on a subconscious level, through thoughts and feelings transference and through body language. People sense our aura and are affected by our thoughts. Is it any wonder that we want to be around positive persons and shun negative ones? People are more disposed to help us if we are positive. They dislike and avoid anyone broadcasting negativity.

Negative thoughts, words and attitude bring up negative and unhappy moods and actions. When the mind is negative, poisons are released into the blood, which cause more unhappiness and negativity. This is the way to failure, frustration and disappointment

When you think of your miles for the week, don't hang your head, moan and think 'ugh, that's a lot of miles'. Instead think... 'HA!! I'm going to try and beat that!!'

Practical Instructions

In order to turn the mind toward the positive, inner work and training are required. Attitude and thoughts do not change overnight.

Read about this subject, think about its benefits and persuade yourself to try it. The power of thoughts is a mighty power that is always shaping our life. This shaping is usually done subconsciously, but it is possible to make the process a conscious one. Even if the idea seems strange give it a try, as you have nothing to lose, but only to gain. Ignore what others might say or think about you, if they discover that you are changing the way you think.

Always visualize only favorable and beneficial situations. Use positive words in your inner dialogues or when talking with others. Smile a little more, as this helps to think positively. Disregard any feelings of laziness or a desire to quit. If you persevere, you will transform the way your mind thinks.

Once a negative thought enters your mind, you have to be aware of it and endeavor to replace it with a constructive one. The negative thought will try again to enter your mind, and then you have to replace it again with a positive one. It is as if there are two pictures in front of you, and you choose to look at one of them and disregard the other. Persistence will eventually teach your mind to think positively and ignore negative thoughts.

In case you feel any inner resistance when replacing negative thoughts with positive ones, do not give up, but keep looking only at the beneficial, good and happy thoughts in your mind.

It does not matter what your circumstances are at the present moment. Think positively, expect only favorable results and situations, and circumstances will change accordingly. It may take some time for the changes to take place, but eventually they do.

Want to find books on the subject, or just read more??

Picture yourself reaching the last city.. and how good your going to feel knowing what you accomplished!Tigerlillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14761882859927345012noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6596323577028001175.post-16388494135347204442008-05-12T08:12:00.000-07:002008-05-12T08:39:17.939-07:00Cleveland, OH
A great city is not merely a collection of buildings. It is a place of connections. At its simplest, a connection can be a bike path that connects a neighborhood to the waterfront or a bus line that connects people to jobs. At its most fundamental, a connection can be a shared space - an urban plaza, a neighborhood park, a community institution or even a coffee shop - that connects people to one another in a way that creates a sense of "place" and a sense of belonging - that elusive but enduring thing that we call a "community."

Cleveland is a great city, a place of connections - an evolving community, vibrant and viable, where we can all belong.
-adapted from the Connecting Cleveland 2020 Citywide Plan

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1-U5qkLwBqtm5NSfWRzChCd-gmPf4X5UzXcnHUPQjLQHwgxCYb8yQmp0Hig8qXW5sfbmHB_9bmWieQ2b84I_rxHhBwVz0607KP73dpIUHwBhJ0fBbXp3yoGSe4TEub3X6JO6h5GsrQtE/s320/triangle%2520logo%2520for%2520web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5199515624509123794" />

Cleveland Bicycle Week
Saturday, May 10, 2008

Numerous organizations are coming together to produce the first ever “Cleveland Bicycle Week”
Promoting Cycling during National Bike Month by hosting fun and educational activities.

*****CHALLENGE*****

You guessed it girls, its time to dust off those bicycles and get peddling! Hundreds of teams compete for over $90,000 in prizes and supreme bragging rights. Teams adorn their areas with elaborate decoration, trophies attesting to their boasting rights, and as one can imagine, clever and creative team names. While grilling is the main theme, the contest wouldn't be complete without the Ms. Piggie competition where grown men dress in tutus and snouts and women kick their heels (hooves) up. The Sunset Symphony featuring the Memphis Symphony Orchestra offers the perfect close to a famous month in Memphis. Begun as a way to bring the Symphony to the masses, the popular event draws thousands who come to picnic, party, play and partake of great music. The orchestra also features scores from the honored country, in 2008 Turkey, including the program opener featuring the National Anthem of the United States of America. In 2008, platinum Motown recording artists, The Four Tops, will be performing.

In 2007, Memphis in May introduced a new element to its most traditional event. The Commemorative Air Force performed a tribute to World War II in a 60-minute air show. Since the air show was such an overwhelming success, Memphis in May is presenting this show in 2008, featuring World War II historic aircrafts the Corsair, Hawker Sea Fury, Stearman and the Russian Yak.

When the sun sets, the Back Yard Burger fireworks show will begin. This dazzling presentation will be orchestrated in part with the Symphony performance, and serve as the grand finale of the 2008 Memphis in May International festival.

***CHALLENGE***

Because one of the main attractions in Tennessee is the Mississippi River this weeks challenge is going to be in the pool. Every day I get to see the sun rise and set, meet lots of nice people, get lots of good exercise, and something unusual happens to me everyday. You never know whats going to happen, whom you will meet, or what the weather will be like. It always reminds me of reading books like "The Hobbit", or "Walk Across America". Their journey began on ice roads along the Arctic Ocean and they made 561 kilometers in the first 15 days, harrowed by icy winds that cut like razor blades. Dave and John Kunst left Waseca, Minnesota with a pack mule named Willie Makeit on June 20, 1970. Only Dave returned, on October 5, 1974, the first person verified to have circled the land mass of the earth on foot. John Kunst was shot and killed by bandits half way around the world in Afghanistan on October 21, 1972. Dave continued after recovering from his own wounds from the attack, joined by a third brother, Pete. They crossed India and on to Australia. By this time they were on their third Willie Makeit mule and when that one died in the Australian desert, an Australian school teacher named Jenni Samuel volunteered to tow their wagon with her car. She and Dave fell in love and were married after the walk ended, 21 pairs of shoes and 20 million steps from the beginning. Read more...

Crossing Continents with a Cross

John Edwards is an evangelist and has walked the length of Ireland and the length of Britain. The Appalachian Trail on the east coast of the USA is the most accessible and well developed in many areas, but still a great challenge. Readers thoroughly enjoyed Bill Bryson's recent bestseller on his attempt, gloriously failed, to thru-hike the AT, A Walk in the Woods. The Appalachian Trail is 2000 miles of rugged hiking, and 2500 people attempt it each year with only 1 in 10 succeeding.

Colin Fletcher inspired many walkers as well with his journeys the length of California in The Thousand Mile Summer and through the Grand Canyon A Walk Through Time. His The Compleat Walker is the bible for gearing up and training for long distance hiking.

The Pacific Crest Trail is more rugged, attains higher altitudes and has fewer facilities than the AT, with 2650 rugged miles from Mexico to Canada. People take the challenge for various reasons - as a personal challenge, as a charity fund-raiser. Another week has gone by and we have all walked our 'tushes' off. It looks like we are all slowing down a little bit.. taking a break?.. thats ok. I dont want you to hurt yourself, and EVERY-BODY needs time to heal. Even walking works those muscles out. So, dont feel bad if you need to take a day or two off.

There are a couple of people who signed up and I have not heard from them since.. so I am going to ask that if you are still participating please contact me and let me know how you are doing... If I dont hear from you by next Monday then I will go ahead and remove your name from the list. I will also remove names of people who I do not hear from for 2 weeks. That way we are all up to date all the time!!

Keep it up and have another fantastic week!

SANTA FE

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihU_8gbZWz5tVD2M9MHgCaU9FadSwWHfFL37EfXC1Ech1m5ZCQa5ab1kO2Zd4xkmT3cjRl8hZCvKQnBvQl_W4t521WcjfHsQjXPztyIQQBHu3vidOaO0KPPHtfTWOFoimDBQkvrGdzhG0/s320/1579image2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5188930302033890098" />
Construction of the Loretto Chapel was completed in 1882. Bishop Lamy who was French, commissioned a strictly Gothic design. The first Gothic structure west of the Mississippi is 25 feet by 75 and reaches a height of 85 feet.

When the building was almost finished someone noticed that while the chapel was beautiful, as was the choir loft, there was no way to get from one to other.
The sisters summonded carpenter after carpenter who told them that a 21 foot staircase in such a small space could simply not be built. Why not tear down the choir loft and begin again, both a daunting and heartbreaking task

The sisters began to pray to Saint Joseph

In answer a grey haired man with a donkey and tool chest came to the convent and asked if he might have a try at building what would be known as the Miraculous Staircase.

When the work was complete the man simply disappeared as suddenly as he appeared and couldn’t be found to accept any pay for the job. Nor was there any charges for lumber at the local lumber yard.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht4njNYjNkc5VIFBNRist975KvC0qEbgGIByaX1GoRSfClXOaL739oLw2uC43Zz1tYrhBbs2LCxvweGcsiICMSuL0OP-i4FqoJMZ7ZbGdV6DSN33L2XPy7-uHx6uggo2W2v_eM5n65wo4/s320/1579image3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5188930598386633538" />The photograph to the right is reprinted from the Saint Joseph Magazine April 1960.
The Miraculous Staircase has 33 steps and makes two complete turns of 360°. The staircase, unlike every other spiral staircase in the world, has no center support and no one can really explain how the thing stands up and bears weight.

Wooden pegs, rather than nails, were used.

The sisters remember the old carpenter using only hammer, saw and T square. They also remember pieces of wood soaking in tubs of water

Nobody has actually pinned down exactly where the wood in the structure came from. The wood is not native to New Mexico.

Who actually built the Miraculous Staircase? Some people think it was St. Joseph himself.

CHALLENGE:

I THINK WE ALL KNOW WHERE THIS ONE IS HEADING.... What mad melange of hubris and masochism can explain this urge to tax my body and soul to the utmost, chasing nothing, fleeing nothing, running for neither money nor glory nor to catch a bus?

I am running for my life inspired by the Adida Indians of Central America. These hardy primitives are truly the aristocrats of distance running and an adult Adida can cover 100 miles nonstop at a pace that would fell an Olympic miler. And among the Adidas, heart disease is virtually unknown. Diabetes, emphysema, stroke - all are unheard of. In fact, the Adidas have no medical knowledge whatsoever. They are completely illiterate and believe that the body is an animal they ride around in.

Easing gently into my new incarnation as a running machine (fleet, sleek, instinctive, fit beyond belief), I followed the athlete's golden maxim: "Train, don't strain". For this afternoon's workout, I wore my running shoes around the apartment for half an hour, gradually tightening my terrycloth headband. Excruciating agony.

Resting heart rate: 249 (Do you count each blub or do blub-blub blubedyblub count as one?)

Thought: "Whatever does not kill me makes me stronger", says Nietzsche, the dead philosopher.

(brought to you by Run the Planet)Tigerlillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14761882859927345012noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6596323577028001175.post-47460472064846306732008-04-06T19:08:00.000-07:002008-04-06T20:41:53.285-07:00Phoenix, ArizonaWe're in week 3 girls. Blisters are forming, muscles are tightening... but we are going to keep on moving. Some of you have set your own goals every week... and I support you fully. I just ask that you don't take it easy on yourself. Push yourself to do that one last mile of the day... or that one last workout.

I know that a lot of you have not yet reached San Francisco.. don't get discouraged. I have decided to extend the end date of the challenge. That date depends on when the last person crosses the finish line in Miami Florida. There will be prizes for the first, second and third place walkers who cross the line first. I have yet to figure out what the prizes will be... but I want everyone to focus on crossing that line...(and within a reasonable time!)

So... whether you are just reaching the hills of San Francisco or the lights of Las Vegas... walk-on!!

FOUR PEAKS, AZ
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieTuczaEDwKiLSbtPqDztjGd05sGJLD68R1Kyot8HaBIPjcUDdk5iaBhNAWLfiHlXSMOJfWxHsNP7f9nM_c2WqRBgrxcKNcNlyfvCWB1gP085evbyP5Z_JxlpoxcOhGcY5UGTowqDJwoU/s320/four+peaks.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5186342371634320210" />

Four Peaks Wilderness was established in 1984, and contains approximately 60,740 acres with a major mountain rising up in its center from the desert foothills. Ask family members, friends, and coworkers to join you. Join a walking group or club, or walk a dog every day. Here is a list of other tips you can try:

Buy a pedometer at a sporting goods store. A pedometer counts how many steps you take. The first time you wear it, count how many steps you normally take in a day. Wear your pedometer every day and set a goal for increasing that number of steps each day . Try to start with an increase of 2,000 steps a day and work toward 10,000.

Get others to join you and set goals as a group.

Fit a walk in wherever you can. Instead of watching TV or going out to eat, go out for a walk.

If the weather is bad, take comfortable shoes to the mall and walk several laps inside.

Walk to the grocery store, medical appointments, work, school, or shopping areas.

Walk around your neighborhood or around a park.

Schedule walks on your daily calendar.

Wear comfortable shoes and socks that cushion your feet.

Drink plenty of water. Take a water bottle with you when you walk.

Be safe and know your surroundings. Walk in a well-lighted, safe place. Carry a cell phone for emergencies.

Plan family outings around walks together. Being physically active with kids sets an example they'll follow as they grow older.

Set a goal to participate in an organized fitness walk.

***** I just had to tell 'The Girls' that you are doing fantastic!! You may not be hitting the 42 miles a week, but you are challenging yourself.. and that is what I was hoping for! Add a set 10 minutes into your walk, midway through, and at the end. Jumps increase impact, which builds more bone, while squats sculpt your thighs and butt. As you get stronger, challenge yourself to up your walking pace.

JUMP SQUATS

(1) With feet hip-width apart, toes forward, sit back, keeping knees behind toes. (2) From there, jump into the air and bend knees as you land with feet wider, toes pointed out. (3) Squat, then jump again, landing in start position. Continue to alternate for all reps, working up to 20 jump squats each set.

Look for other great tips from Prevention Magazine.Tigerlillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14761882859927345012noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6596323577028001175.post-74812387651127745572008-03-26T08:13:00.000-07:002008-03-26T08:45:04.995-07:00The Benefits of WalkingHi Girls!!

You are rocking this challenge. Some of you have said that you are feeling a little overwhelmed with the number of miles. I just wanted to remind everyone that the whole purpose of this challenge is to get you moving. So, if you cant walk 6 miles a day (and if you are just starting to exorcise you may not be able to) then do an aerobic exorcise. A 1 hour aerobics class or DVD counts as 3 miles. If you want to walk but live in cold weather, no gym or lacking motivation then go to the store and buy a walking DVD. In one hour you can walk 3 miles in your living room! (This is great for those of you with young children!) I used a walking DVD before getting my treadmill... I have two walking DVD workouts and one Dance and Sculpt workout by Denise Austin. (I will say that I cannot stand Denise Austin so I am happy to give away her workouts! BUT they are good workouts!) The first people to email me their mailing address and which workout they want will get them in the mail next week!

Now... I have been keeping track of my miles every day on the blog... you can too. Just leave the amount of time or miles that you moved that day in the comments section of the newest post and I will update in the morning. If you would rather just wait until Monday to tell us, you are welcome to do that too!

Walk-On!

Benefits of Walking

Walking for fitness can help you achieve a number of important health benefits. For example, you can:

Reduce your risk of a heart attack. Walking keeps your heart healthy by lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol) and raising high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol). A regular walking program also reduces your risk of developing high blood pressure, a factor that also contributes to heart disease.

Manage your blood pressure. If you already have high blood pressure, walking may reduce it.
Reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Regular exercise reduces your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. If you're a woman, overweight and at a high risk of diabetes, walking can improve your body's ability to process sugar (glucose tolerance).

Manage your diabetes. If you already have type 2 diabetes, taking part in a regular walking program can improve your body's ability to process sugar, lower your blood sugar, reduce your risk of heart disease and help you live longer.

Manage your weight. Walking burns calories, which can help you manage your weight. For example, middle-aged women who walk more than 10,000 steps a day have lower levels of body fat than do women who are less active.

Manage stress and boost your spirits. Going for a brisk walk is a great way to reduce stress. Regular walking also can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety.

Stay strong and active. As you get older, walking for physical fitness can prevent falls, help you stay mobile and maintain your independence.

Tigerlillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14761882859927345012noreply@blogger.com8
