LAS VEGAS

We are beginning our second week... which brings us to our second city. Las Vegas! I decided that it would be less confusing if we just continued adding on miles..so the goal to reach Las Vegas is 84 miles!

Some history on the city of 'lost wages'.

1885: The State Land Act of 1885 offers sections of land at $1.25 per acre. Farmers move in and agriculture becomes the dominant industry for the next 20 years.

1905: Las Vegas is founded as a city on May 15, 1905, when 110 acres of land situated between Stewart Avenue on the north, Garces Avenue to the south, Main Street to the west, and 5th Street (Las Vegas Boulevard) to the east, are auctioned off.

1911: Divorce laws are liberalized in the State of Nevada, making residency easier to attain. A "quickie" divorce can be attained after six weeks of residency. These short-term residents stay at "dude ranches" which are the forerunners of the sprawling Strip hotels.

1931:While gambling took place illegally for many years, it was officially legalized in March 1931 by the state legislature.

1957:Topless Showgirls debut on the Strip with "Minsky's Follies."

1960:During the 1960s, a phenomenon led by Howard Hughes, occurs in Las Vegas. Corporations are building and/or buying hotel/casino properties. They have the capital necessary and the profitability makes entrance into the casino industry extremely attractive. Gambling becomes "gaming" and starts the transition into legitimate business.

1969:Elvis Presley opens at the International Hotel, now known as the Las Vegas Hilton

The Las Vegas Challenge:

While in Las Vegas we have to try our luck at the slots... so we have to get our arms in shape!

1. Walk for 15 minutes while carrying 3-5 lb dumbbells (if you don't have dumbbells then use water jugs or cans). Try to work your biceps, triceps and shoulders during your walk.

Hi Tigerlily and all, I have done fairly good the past two days--11 miles, which should bring my total to 43.5. Sometimes my legs hurt so much I don't think I'll be able to finish this challenge, and then other times I feel so great that I run/jog! And all in the same day.

I wonder if all of you know that it is way less stressful to walk on dirt than on pavement. At home I almost always walk on a dirt road because that is where i live. Up here at my friends' I find myself trying to walk on the shoulder of the road instead of the pavement. I just realized while I was writing this that I reached S.F.--Yay! I'll do my challenge tomorrow morning.
